In the book Break the Shame, photographer Agneta Ekman Wingate portrays thirty people who have experienced mental illness. The book's starting point is a dizzying photographic exhibition of the same name.

The life stories in Break the Shame are depicted through portraits, artistic expressions and personal texts that share important experiences around illness, guilt, shame and hope, as well as turning points and reorientation. Ekman has interviewed and photographed each storyteller. In the book, she also shares her own experiences with mental illness.

Agneta Ekman Wingate is an internationally acclaimed photographer. Published in Aperture USA, Swiss Camera, Creative Camera, England. She has exhibited in art galleries and museums. She previously published the book Tall-Maja (Gebers 1967), which is considered a historic photobook.
