Venus Inferred.
Photographs by Laura Letinsky. Essay and Interview by Lauren Berlant.
University Of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2000.
112 pp.,
46 color illustrations,
11x10½".
For seven years photographer Letinsky was allowed into the most private of 'scenes' between lovers; she photographed couples in their homes, bedrooms, hotel rooms, and kitchens in a search for what it means to be a lover and to be loved. The promises, let-downs, and harmonies involved in the life of a couple is thoughtfully conveyed through her images; the text by Berlant adds weight and thoughtfulness to make this a surprisingly fresh book.
