In the American West.
Photographs 1979-1984.

Photographs by Richard Avedon.
Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1985. 184 pp., 11x14".

Beginning in 1979, Richard Avedon produced this five year series of portraits of those who characterize the American West. Focusing on the men and women who work at hard, uncelebrated jobs, Avedon photographed ranch workers, bartenders, oil field workers, miners, and rustlers, among many others. An extraordinary, controversial book that will be talked about for decades to come, In The American West is also a major traveling exhibit that opened at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.
