Contemporary Southwest Native America.

Photographs by Skeet McAuley. Traditional Navajo stories by Mike Mitchell. Introduction by N. Scott Momaday. Afterword by Martha A. Sandweiss.
Aperture, New York, 1989. 78 pp., 48 color plates,, 9½x11½".

Over a period of seven years, Skeet McAuley photographed the reservation life of Navajo and White Mountain Apache Indians. This unromantic view of the influence of contemporary culture on the life of the Southwest American Indian produced a body of work charged with irony as modern life conflicts with tradition. McAuley's large format color work successfully communicates this profound change.
