A History and Handbook of Photography.

Text by Gaston Tissandier. Edited by J. Thomson. Appendix by Henry Fox Talbot.
Arno Press, New York, 1973. 393xx pp., illustrated with woodcuts and engravings, 5½x8½".

Tissandier's book is one of the most important nineteenth-century sources on the medium's history, its processes, and its applications. The third section on photographic applications--comprising more than half the book--remains even today the principal reference to many of the techniques of the time, especially to those developed in France. The topics range from photomechanical printing, photosculpture and photographic enamels, to photomicography, and astronomical photography. Other subjects include heliography, photographic registering instruments, the stereoscope, the uses of photography in land-surveying, in war, in criminology, and in art investigations
