A Singular Elegance.

The Photographs of Baron Adolph de Meyer.

Text by Anne Ehrenkranz. Dedication by John Szarkowski. Introduction by Willis Hartshorn.
Chronicle Books, San Francisco, 1994. 128 pp., 70 tritone illustrations, 9½x11¾".

The Baron Adolph de Meyer, in spite of his dubious title, was truly worthy of the elegant company he kept. One of the very first photographers to treat commercial photography with a sensual, painterly approach, de Meyer photographed the likes of Coco Chanel, Josephine Baker, John Barrymore, Nijinski, and the Prince of Wales. His ethereal still-lifes and compelling portraits continue to define the genre of fashion photography.
