Greybull Press, Los Angeles, 2004. 168 pp., 137 color and 25 duotone illustrations, 9½x11".

Like the Shriners themselves, with their big-men-on-little-cars parade routine seen in small towns across the country, this book embodies a sense of humor and a fun-loving spirit. The mini cars, the clown corps, the ubiquitous red fez, the circuses, and the football games are here in all their glory. But this project also goes behind the scenes to consider the Shriners' charitable hospitals, renown for their service to child amputees and burn victims along with the Shriners' founding principles and rituals. Throughout, we sense that this kind of freemasonry, upon whose ideas many of our founding fathers built this country, may be dying out in our culture. Through her images, Eisner reveals the dignity behind the kitsch and the wisdom of not taking life too seriously.
