Photographs, Films, Drawings.

Photographs and art by Vanessa Beecroft.
Hatje Cantz, Ostfildern, 2004. 224 pp., 117 color illustrations, 6x9½".

Publisher's Description
Vanessa Beecroft's performances have been described as art, fashion, brilliant, terrible, evocative, provocative, disturbing, sexist, and empowering. The primary material in her work is the live female figure, which remains ephemeral, and separate. These women, mainly unclothed, similar, unified through details like hair color, or identical shoes, stand motionless in the space while viewers watch them, looking like an army of supermodels or soldiers lined up for inspection - regimented, vacant, and unapproachable. Beecroft's provocative tabeaux are accompanied here by the drawings and backstage Poloroids used by the artist in planning her often-disturbing performances. Also featured is an extensive interview with Beecroft, which touches on topics informing her work, including men, anorexia, exercise, family, film, and beauty.
