Publisher's Description
This project was playfully conceived as an homage to John Deakin and Francis Bacon. Letbetter asked Rino to transform photographs he had taken of him. Recreating how Deakin's pictures had been damaged on the walls and floor of Bacon's studio. As Deakin's work was wrinkled and torn by Bacon accidentally and over time, a forced mimesis of this natural process seemed inauthentic. Looking through stored boxes of Rino's artwork spanning fifteen years, he found a portfolio of pencil drawings of Bacon's 'Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion 1944.' Rino collaged these pieces onto Letbetter's portraits of him and a more inspired body of work became evident. Continuing from the rediscovered drawings and two new photo sessions they made the body of portraits contained in this volume.
