Publisher's Description

Out of Print.

Photographer Diana Scherer studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and has been based in the city since 2003. In this series of black-and-white photographs made between 2002 and 2007, she portrays both young girls and dresses for girls in an endearing yet somewhat troubling reflection on innocence and the fostering of gender roles. We never see the girls’ faces, as their bodies seem to float against a black void, or they lie prone on the floor, hair and clothing askew. The doll-like dresses are more carefully laid out as static, contemplative objects, accentuating the contrast between stylised appearances and the reality of a child’s disposition.
