Violence and Passion.

Photographs by Erwin Olaf.
Reflex Modern Art Gallery, Amsterdam, 2000. Unpaged, 25 color illustrations, 8½x11".

Essentially a critique of the modern-day obsession with ageless beauty and the hottest styles, Violence and Passion excerpts Olaf's three most recent bodies of work, "Royal Blood," "Fashion Victims," and "Mature." Each of these bodies of work are witty in their own way, seductive to be sure, but with a tinge of sarcasm. What they all share is flawless technicality, touched by slight digital manipulation, as in the case of "Royal Blood," in which the deaths of famous figures are re-examined. "Fashion Victims" blatantly exposes the marketability of flesh, and "Mature" reveals the beauty and imperfections of sexy pensioners.
