M 1: Unlikely Encounters.
Magnum Photos.

Photographs by Susan Meiselas, Chien-Chi Chang, Jim Golberg, Martin Parr, Bruce Davidson, Bruce Gilden, and Thomas Dworzak.
Magnum Photos, Paris, 2004. 68 pp., 25 black-and-white and 16 color illustrations, 9¾x13".

Founded two years after WWII by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and David "Chim" Seymour, the Magnum agency idealistically strove to provide a venue for projects outside the boundaries of conventional magazine photojournalism. That idealism worked, and continues to serve the world. Dozens of photographers now form the ranks of Magnum and are considered some of the best photographers working. M vol. 1, a new magazine published by the agency, has just been released by the agency and is a decidedly unique publication presenting slices of bodies of work by several Magnum photographers. There has been conscious placement of seemingly disparate bodies of work next to each other; brief essays inform these choices, allowing the images to play off of each other. The result is a hybrid publication of depth and intensity.
