Publisher's Description
Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) was a dedicated photographer as well as a dedicated filmmaker. By turns or at the same time. When Dutch television was developing, he eagerly jumped on the bandwagon as a beginning filmamker. When Avenue was launced as the first Dutch glossy, he willingly took to color photography. in both disciplines he experimented a lot with cameras and lenses, to get as close as possible to the esence of his subjects. In Amsterdam these were people in working-class areas, street urchins, rebellious youth and his own family life. All this against the background of the old neighbourhoods in the city centre.

Published to coincide with the Summer 2005 exhibition of van der Elsken's work curated by Martin Parr, this DVD features ten films - eight of them by the artist himself - detailing Amsterdam and van der Elsken's relationship with his native city and its inhabitants. Also included is a booklet with infomation on each film and a short biography. In Dutch with English subtitles.
