Beneath an Open Sky.

Panoramic Photographs by Gary Irving. Introduction by Raymond Bial.
University of Illinois Press, Chicago, 1990. Unpaged, 60 full color plates, 12x10½".

Gary Irving's photographs display a loving affinity for the American Midwest. Those reproduced in this volume are made with a panoramic camera, a format uniquely capable of exploring the expansive prairie landscape. Irving approaches his rural and small town subject matter with a sense of intimacy that saves his work from being purely sentimental. His photographs are pretty, but not superficially so.
