Stratton has chosen to photograph abandoned prisons as a means of addressing some of the issues surrounding the brutality of imprisonment. Such sites as Alcatraz Island, Ellis Island, and the now-demolished Jamesville Penitentiary offer us a glimpse of this earthly purgatory.
