Plain Pictures of Plain Doctoring.
Vernacular Expression in New Deal Medicine and Photography.

Written by John D. Stoeckle, M.D., and George Abbott White.
MIT Press, Cambridge, 1985. 250 pp., 10x9".

This selection of eighty photographs from the Farm Security Administration files is a unique and useful look at little-known images by Lange, Lee, Shahn, Delano, Vachon, Wolcott, and the other FSA photographers. Unlike previous books based on the FSA file, Plain Pictures of Plain Doctoring examines a single subject--medicine--and creates a historical rather than a fine-art context around the pictures. The essays which comprise most of the book are "thoughtful historical precis of the medicine illustrated in the photographs." A well-designed, nicely printed book offering new insights into depression-era documentary photography.
