This landmark book reproduces in duotone 431 of August Sander's great portraits of Germans taken during the first half of the twentieth century. The photographs are divided into seven sections: farmers, workers, women, occupations, artists, the big city, and "the last people." This remarkable body of work was left incomplete upon Sander's death. Ulrich Keller and the photographer's son, Gunther Sander, have undertaken this reconstruction using Sander's notes and negatives. An artistic and documentary triumph of unprecedented proportion!
