One Time, One Place.

Mississippi in the Depression: A Snapshot Album.

Photographs and text by Eudora Welty. Foreword by William Maxwell.
University Press of Mississippi, Jackson, 1996. 124 pp., 102 duotone illustrations, 8x8".

Eudora Welty is one of the very few authors who are acclaimed for their work in both literature and photography. Her record of poor families in Depression-era Mississippi is a moving portrait of survival and endurance. Ironically, the subjects in the photographs are unaware that they are coping with unusually dire conditions, and press onward. Welty says of this in her introduction: "The Depression, in fact, was not a noticeable phenomenon in the poorest state in the Union." A fascinating piece of work by an American original.
