Hard Twist. Contemporary Western Ranch Women.

Photographs by Barbara Van Cleve. Text by Spike Van Cleve and Michael Duty. Foreword by Thomas McGuane.
Museum of New Mexico Press, Santa Fe, 1995. 176 pp., 120 duotone illustrations, 10¾x12½".

No part of American history has been more celebrated, glorified, and mythologized than that of the American West. The myth that men settled the land with no assistance from women, that ranching is the sole province of men, is one which is fundamentally untrue. Photographer Barbara Van Cleve documents western women at work, imbuing the images with a sense of the age-old tradition which continues today. Effectively dispelling the twisted mythology of the past, Van Cleve shows the strength which has always been present in the women of the West.
