Of more than 70,000 photographic prints collected under the auspices of the FSA, nearly 5000 were made in New Mexico by Russell Lee, John Collier, Jr., Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein, and Jack Delano. In this book, the author has retraced the steps of the photographers and found the oil boomtowns, the mining camps, the Hispanic villages, and the Dust Bowl communities where they worked. She interviews the people who remember being photographed, and the combination of their recollections and the original photographs provide a vivid and moving portrait of their struggles to survive.
