Shards of America.

Photographs by Phil Bergerson. Introduction by David Harris.
Quantuck Lane Press, New York, 2004. 136 pp., 119 color illustrations, 9x9¾".

In Shards of America, Bergerson, a Canadian photographer, undertakes a cultural exploration of the United States through its signage and shop windows, following the tradition of both Evans and Ruscha. Concentrating his work pri-marily in small, main-street-style towns, Bergerson looks through the camera as a stranger might, seeing it all with fresh eyes and celebrating these overlooked, often neglected sites. A mural of Jesus and the disciples seemingly presides over a dumpster, Joy appears written hundreds of times on detergent bottles in a dime store window, and advertisements, graffiti, newspaper headlines and mannequins are often featured in the same shot together. His indelible spirit of curiosity shines above the undertone of gentle irony and a soft-spoken commentary on consumerism. Read Publisher's Description.
