Truth or Consequences is a small New Mexican town that voted to change its name from Hot Springs to that of a celebrated radio quiz show in 1950. Waplington first visited this quirky town in 1993, having heard of the natural springs that well-up nearby. 50 rolls of film later, he conceived the idea of making an annual trip to the town and his first images formed the beginnings of an extended project. Waplington subtitled the book A Personal History of American Photography from the Last Century, and pays homage to such great figures of the genre as Edward Weston, William Eggleston, and Walker Evans.
