48 duotone illustrations,

Operating the largest chicken farm on the island of Taiwan, Li Kun-Tai, an abbot turned Buddhist monk, tends the farm with over 700 mental patients in the 'care' of the Temple, most chained together in pairs. Chien-Chi Chang, himself a native Taiwanese, took these photographs with a sense of awe. The tender images, presented in an exquisite accordion-fold book which is itself reminiscent of a chain, speaks of compassion and terror, a fugue played out on the faces of these men.
