The Fat Baby.

Photographs by Eugene Richards.
Phaidon, London, 2004. 432 pp., 300 dutone illustrations, 11¼x8¼".

Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1944, Richards studied photography under Minor White and has been a member of the prestigious Magnum Agency since 1981. He maintains the tradition of a true photojournalist, both photographing and writing about the work. The Fat Baby brings together some 15 stories all made since 1990. They are all very different in both style and tone and "immerse us in the lives of Honduran coffee growers, members of a Kansas City street gang, drought-plagued villagers from Niger, and doctors in an embattled Bosnian hospital. They chronicle the birth of a first child, an explosion of family violence, the struggle of a farm family to hang onto its ancestral home, and the unearthing of a half-hidden grave said to hold the remains of a slave."—the publisher. This book provides evidence that Richards retains his position as one of the most important of living photographers. Read Publisher's Description.
