The Victor Weeps, Afghanistan. Photographs and text by Fazal Sheikh.

The Victor Weeps, Afghanistan.

Photographs and text by Fazal Sheikh.
Scalo, Zurich, English, 1998. In Switzerland. 208 pp., 140 duotone illustrations, 9x11¾".

Ravaged by years of resistance to the Soviet invasion and by the political infighting and turbulence left in its wake, Afghanistan has become one of the world's most paradoxical states: it is a deeply spiritual society turned chaotic and violent. In Fazal Sheikh's first monograph, A Sense of Common Ground, beautiful portraits humanized the inhabitants of famine torn African refugee camps. In this latest project, a richly layered meditation on human rights and war, Sheikh achieves a much higher level of trust with his subjects, creating an essential, highly personal document.
