Embryonic Landscapes.

Photographs by Ariel Ruiz i Altaba. Text by Joan Fontcuberta, John Berger, and William T. Vollman.
Actar, Barcelona, 2001. 256 pp., 50 duotone illustrations, 7½x10½".

Mexican-born Ruiz i Altaba received his doctorate from Harvard in molecular biology and biochemistry and, over the past fifteen years, has produced the images presented here--a conscious combination of science and art. As he states in his introduction, "Embryonic Landscapes is a collection of images of embryonic forms and the spaces they create." Produced by one of Spain's premier art/photography publishers, the book contains numerous brief essays, including ones by Joan Fontcuberta and William Vollman. Read Publisher's Description.
