Text and photographs by Thomas Struth.
Schirmer/Mosel, New York, 2001.
168 pp.,
112 color illustrations,
8½x11½".
Thomas Struth, a student of the photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher, has risen to prominence not only within the German and European photography communities, but also in this country. This new monograph presents a group of botanical studies for which he was commissioned in the early 90s. The specific purpose was to decorate a new hospital to be built in Switzerland; Struth undertook to produce two flower studies and a landscape photograph for each of the 37 sickrooms. Beatifully reproduced, Dandelion Room recreates the triptychs in vibrant color and gives one a sense of the delicacy and healing quality to the work.
