Elemental Landscapes.

Photographs by Harry Callahan. Text by Katherine Ware and Anne d'Harnoncourt.
Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, 2001. 56 pp., 59 duotone illustrations, 9x12".

Throughout his long and distinguished career, the late photographer Harry Callahan turned to the landscape in a decidedly different manner than his contemporaries, for he was not interested so much in sweeping vistas and awesome panoramas as he was in the intimacy of details. The omnipresence of the horizon line, implying a nature-imposed dichotomy, is clearly removed from his work, but the grandeur of nature persists, reflected in the twigs, leaves, and grass that drew Callahan in. Elemental Landscapes is published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, bringing together a wide range of work from the early 40s through the early 90s.
