This first major book to examine photographs of Indians, by both Native- and Anglo-Americans, presents over 300 images from 1840 to the present. The book explores the influence of technology on traditional lifestyle, and discusses the agenda not only of the photographers but of the subjects, as the political power of images was realized. The text provides biographies of the photographers and authoritative dating of the photographs in addition to an extensive bibliography.
