Rich and Poor.
Photographs and afterword by Jim Goldberg.
Random House, New York, 1985. 160 pp., 8½x11".

Goldberg's portraits of people from two contrasting economic classes quickly became a classic work. The subjects are portrayed in their own environment, with all the artifacts of American culture surrounding them. Their own handwritten personal statements are included with each image. The resulting combination gives a disturbing look at the American myth and dream in a surprisingly powerful photo-text format. Goldberg's afterword underscores his intent to inspire a reinterpretation of the myths that direct our society.
