Photographs of Thomas Merton.

Photographs by Ralph Eugene Meatyard. Edited by Barry Magid. Essay by Guy Davenport.
Rizzoli, New York, 1991. 96 pp., 50 duotone illustrations, 10x10".

Trappist monk and philosopher Thomas Merton was a close friend of Ralph Eugene Meatyard's during the last years of the photographer's life. The two had a relationship that centered around metaphysics and photography, with Merton often posing for Meatyard. Fifty of the resulting photographs--printed by Meatyard's son after his father's death--are shown here, most of them for the first time. Also includes an essay by their mutual friend Guy Davenport, who introduced the two.
