Photographs by Irving Penn. Essays by Merry A. Foresta and William Stapp.
Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, 1994. 192 pp., 120 duotone illustrations, 8½x11".

Selected by Penn, the images in this monograph represent, in his words, "the cream of my work." Included are artist portraits, nudes, still-lifes, fashion, and portraits on location in places such as Cameroon and Morocco. Merry Foresta, curator of photography at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art, and William Stapp, a curator at the International Museum of Photography at the Eastman House, contribute essays on Penn's life and work that serve as an introduction to the book.
