American Bikers.

Photographs by Sandro Miller.
teNeues, New York, 1998. 160 pp., 63 duotone illustrations, 9¼x12½".

Bikers--especially the Harley riding, leather wearing variety--are among the most misunderstood, misrepresented segments of contemporary American culture. Although their style of life conjures up images of ancient nomadic warriors, there is a compassionate side that Sandro Miller's portraits reveal. The photographer discovered this intimacy at a fundraiser for handicapped children--one sponsored by an Illinois biker club.
