Born in France in 1910, Ronis photographed in Europe and the United States throughout his life, winning a first prize for his work from Kodak in 1947, exhibiting in the Venice Biennale in 1957, and attending in 1980 an honorary retrospective of his work at the XIth International Festival at Arles. Ronis was a friend of Chim (David Seymour), and participated in such exhibitions at The Family of Man and Four French Photographers, both curated by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
