In My Taxi.

New York After Hours.

Photographs and text Ryan Weideman.
Thunder's Mouth Press, New York, 1991. Unpaged, numerous duotone plates,, 10x8".

When photographer Ryan Weideman arrived in New York City in 1980, he started driving a cab to pay the rent. To break down the isolation between himself and his passengers, he began photographing them. This remarkable book of his photographs of his "fares," taken at night in his Checker cab, reveals a gallery of New Yorkers--businessmen and punk rockers, hookers and high society debs. The portraits are touching; some are unforgettable. Weideman has captured his passengers in slack moments, in transit, their defenses down. "Photography in the cab brings its own grace," Weideman writes appropriately in his introduction.
