In the 1840s, when photography was making its first appearances, the American West was a region of excitement, adventure, and progress. The rest of the world was perpetually curious about the latest developments in the promising frontier, and photographers were in demand--they were correspondents who could give the most literal descriptions in the form of photographs. This book is a collection of the images which were published in the various photographic books of the time, compiled by renowned archivist David Margolis. A scholarly look at the phenomenon of historical photography in the mid-19th century.
