Celebrating Water

Fotofest, Inc.
Fotofest, Inc., Houston, 2004. 364 pp., numerous black-and-white and color illustrations, 8x8".

The fotofest biennial began in 1986 and has blossomed to become the most important photographic event in North America. FotoFest takes place in Houston every other year, drawing international crowds and attention. The theme of this year's festival was Celebrating Water, a topic of particular concern in the American West but, clearly, crucial to a sustainable global society. Numerous photographers and authors participated in the events and have been gathered together in the catalogue, which is now available. "Mark Twain once said that whisky is for drinking and water is for fighting. That is the position water plays in the developed West. But water can also be seen as a metaphor for contemplating time and space, a natural force turned into a kind of nature /culture/time coordinate system for tracking an era of change. Landscape photographs then become maps in four dimensions."—Mark Klett, from an essay on water in the West.
