First a successful commercial photographer, Kenro Izu (b. 1949) achieved recognition for his images of the world's ancient, long-abandoned places of worship, such as the temple at Angkor Wat. This calendar's twelve black-and-white floral still lifes were contact printed onto paper hand coated with platinum and palladium; Izu used a 14 x 20-inch camera with a 50-year-old lens. The images produced by this complex process capture fully the subjects' minimalist, meditative quality.
