Publisher's Description
In the spring of 2007, John Gossage was invited by the Sheldon Art Galleries to create new work in the Midwestern river city, St. Louis, Missouri. The photographs made on this visit will become part of a larger body of work that investigates the "right now" in America. Focusing the project on mid-size, not iconic cities, he began work in Memphis, Tennessee, home to his friend, photographer William Eggleston, and accompanied by British photographer Martin Parr. Created in the spirit of Walker Evans's American Photographs and Robert Frank's The Americans, each of which captured a particular moment in the history of vernacular American culture, Gossage's photographs will provide yet another view of the social landscape, this time at the dawn of the 21st century.
