Publisher's Description
This a continuation of Dakhnovskaia-Lawton’s project “Wondering about Pictorialism” done this time on a smaller scale and includes twelve new images. This strategy unifies the intimacy of the image and the scale of the book into a new, contemporary approach.

The artist, whose inspiration was originally drawn from the 19th century pictorial aesthetic and Stieglitz’s “Camera Work” magazine, embarked on a long journey in trying not only to comprehend the intricacy of the old-fashioned aesthetic but also in making an attempt to bring it into contemporary life.

“Dakhnovskaia-Lawton’s images are lyrical and poetic, inhabiting the sensibility of early Pictorialism’s best practitioners: George H. Seely, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Clarence H. White, Gertrude Kasebier, Edward Steichen, and Alfred Stieglitz” says Stephen Perloff, editor of Photo Review. In this project, by emphasizing the small image scale along with the pictorial language and using a muted monochrome tone of photogravures, Irina Dakhnovskaia-Lawton successfully creates an intimate connection between an image and a viewer bringing the old sensibility into our everyday life.

The book is presented in a dark brown jacket over 16 folded pages bound accordion style. Limited to 75 copies, each consists of 12 tipped in archival pigmented prints, an artist’s statement and a colophon. Each copy is signed and numbered by the artist. The introduction is written by Stephen Perloff, the editor of Photo Review magazine.

The book is designed, printed and assembled by the artist using Fabriano and Canson papers.
