Publisher's Description

EGYPT, my first entirely handmade artist book, was inspired by the formal, now classical tradition of the French Livre de Lux and the travel books of 20th Century photographers whose work I admired Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Alfred Steiglitz and Paul Caponigro.

After the death of my grandmother in 1992, I made a six-week journey to Egypt, in search of the beginning of time. I looked for old Egypt, or those images, which could have taken place hundred's of years before my setting foot in this amazing culture of antiquity. The 20 images I selected were printed on Agfa's Portriga Rapid paper and mounted to B.F.K. paper inside a gently de-bossed window. The folios were then hand-sewn with a traditional Coptic binding, between papyrus-covered boards. The work includes a letterpress title page, a short introduction, a list of images, a colophon page and a clamshell box container.
