Publisher's Description
An Everchanging Monument, 2012, portrays the paradoxical meeting between a nature-bound metamorphosis and a memorial rooted in culture - The Musical Gardens, a place both ephemeral and eternal. Throughout a year and a half the photographer Christina Capetillo has portrayed the Modernist landscape architectural icon The Musical Gardens in Denmark by Danish landscape architect C. Th. Sørensen (1893-1979). In the book An Everchanging Monument she captures the different states that are unfolded in the gardens’ series of spaces through the course of time – creating a photographic narrative of the ’long drama’, created by the matter of landscape art - light, structure and plants.

The Musical Gardens is the ultimate and unique example of Modernism’s landscape art. The project stands as an icon to a century of architectural history, because it summarises the entire concept of Modernism in one artistic stroke. The project can be called abstract, because it is free of any practical function and without connection to place. In its pure form, the project can be realized in various sizes and materials and is a monument to architecture, the spatial arts and landscape architecture.

'The Musical Gardens, designed in 1945, but built many years after Sørensen's death, is among his great works...Christina Capetillo's exquisite photographs, deftly paired and sequenced, evoke the genius of the design. The images reveal landscape as a dynamic and paradoxical medium: ever changing; juxtaposing Euclidean and fractal geometry. The Musical Gardens is timeless, yet it is a work of time, in time.'
