Night Lights.

Photographs by Shintaro Sato.
T&M Projects, Japan, 2014. 64 pp., 12¼x9½".

Publisher's Description

This book is a reprint of Night Lights, originally published in 2000 (self-published). The nature of the reprint is in my view something that highlights the very characteristics of Shintaro Sato’s work.

Photography is at once a form of expression by mechanical means, and a duplication technology. This basic premise has been repeatedly pointed out throughout the history of photography. At the same time, now that photography seems to be swinging between the obvious polar opposites of art and pop, it is a premise with capacities that tend to be overlooked. I consider Sato’s works to be redefining this potential within the framework of photography today.

Fifteen years after its initial publication, the book Night Lights, containing photographs taken between 1997 and 1999 in downtown areas in Tokyo and Osaka, has been restructured for this new 2014 edition.
It represents at once the starting point of Sato's creative work, an icon of the "city" in the country Japan, and the position of the photograph that, beyond space and time, has long gained independence from the "scenery".
