Publisher's Description

"Village is a new book by Swedish photographers Klara Källström and Thobias Fäldt. It explores a complex web of language politics of Canada and the very format of photobook.

Language is both means for communication and a platform for politics in Canada. Especially in Quebec, where a forgotten layer of indigenous linguistic history lies. Photographers explore this delicate legacy employing a novel use of documentary photography. It includes using the photographic caption in a conceptual way and locates the project within the history of subjective documentary, especially quoting Robert Frank’s famous The Americans in its references.

In its core Village is a document of certain time and place, thus by extension a project of documentary photography, but one with concept and attitude. Layers of politics, history and culture are revealed to a curious viewer, as she gets deeper into the narrative presented in the book’s pages. Between the politics of language and acuteness of vision, Village suggests layers of conflicting meanings on its apparently two-dimensional surface."
