MAA is about funeral rites that have been performed for thousands of years in the center of Varanasi , the holiest city of India. The images have been collected and organized by Frederick after meeting Indra , one of the few people to whom the local community grants permission to photograph the dead. Composed of photographic portraits of corpses wrapped in necklaces of flowers and images depicting the everyday life of Varanasi , the body of MAA moves between anthropological research, reportage and art photography. The documentation work, carried out by suspending all judgment, appears inextricably linked to the need to grasp in controversial forms of Indian death a living sense of beauty.
