Blue Line of Woods is the result of an artist residency at the MacDowell Colony in the summer of 2010. Using diazotype paper (called “blue-line” by architects who traditionally used it) and the cameraless photogram process, Carroll exposed over 400 6’ by 3’ sheets of this light sensitive material to the dappled light of the forest floor. The images are simultaneously monumental and ephemeral, shifting in-and-out of focus and intensely blue.

Due to the massive scale of the original prints, Carroll created this artist’s book. While each panel is reduced in size to fit two on a page, Carroll has extended the width of the book by accordion binding and created one continuous page. The resulting sequence is a tightly edited selection of over 120 panels from the series. The book can be experienced traditionally page-by-page, or removed entirely from its cover and unfolded to reveal the single continuous image--nearly 50 feet in length.

An additional booklet is included on the inside cover with an essay by the artist and images relating to the process. The cover includes a tipped-in unfixed gelatin silver print that will continue to change as it receives exposure to ultraviolet light and the inside title page includes a hand-cut stencil by the artist.

Blue Line of Woods was assembled, bound, and foil-stamped by John DeMerritt Bookbinding in Emeryville, CA. Work from Blue Line of Woods has been exhibited widely across the United States including New York, NY, San Francisco, CA, and Dallas, TX.
