A Game of Chess.
Photographs by Ellen Wallenstein.
Women's Studio Workshop, Rosendale, NY, 1986.
12 pp.,
6x6".
Ellen Wallenstein in this unusual accordion fold-out book of photographs provides us with her metaphor for "chess" playing. We see a castle where presumably the game will be played, a statue of man to be used as a playing piece, the black-and-white tile playing floor, another statue contemplating a move, etc. Full of mystery and understatement, A Game of Chess is an artist's book in the sense that all of the design, photography, and layout were done by Wallenstein herself. An envelope with a tipped on duotone is included and acts as a slipcover for the book.
