The Animals.
Photographs by Garry Winogrand. Text by John Szarkowski.
The Museum of Modern Art, New York City, 2004. 48 pp., 46 duotones, 10x8½".

Joining the ranks of reprinted titles mentioned in Andrew Roth's monumental The Book of 101 Books is The Animals, one of two titles offered this season on Garry Winogrand, the master of deceptively simple street photography. The Animals was first published as a paperback by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1968; it is they who bring the title back into print, this time as a hardcover book with dustjacket, some 36 years later. John Szarkowski, then Director of Photography at MoMA lent his hand to the essay. "Winogrand's zoo, even if true, is a grotesquery. It is a surreal Disneyland where unlikely human beings and jaded careerist animals stare at each other through bars, exhibiting bad manners and a mutual failure to recognize their own ludicrous predicaments." —Szarkowski. Public Relations, published by MoMA, in 1977. Read Publisher's Description.
