California Photography.
Remaking Make-Believe.

Curated by Carole Kismaric. Photographs by John Baldessari, Robert Heinecken, Larry Sultan, John Divola, and others.
Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1989. 84 pp., 34 color illustrations,, 9x9".

Published to accompany an exhibition of the same name, the photographs in this exhibition challenge the traditions of photography. The essay examines the evolution of contemporary photography in California, revealing a set of factors and circumstances that has created a distinctly synthetic style. This book is a concise survey that reflects a philosophical consideration of conventional ideas about photography, especially the right of the medium to claim special access to truth.
