Publisher's Description
Since 2009, the jewel of Frankfurt's skyline - the Dresden Bank building - has stood vacant. In Silver Tower, photographer Matthias Hoch explores the deserted 1978 building designed by Otl Aicher as an entropic monument to the Federal Republic of Germany, a physical palimpsest of Cold War politics. One of the largest banking corporations in Germany until its recent acquisition, Dresden Bank represents the era of rampant growth in West Germany known as the 'economic miracle.' This current series of evocative photographs reveals the building's meticulously structured surfaces, signs of wear and the interplay of light in its charged, empty spaces. Developed out of Hoch's work in the 2009 LACMA exhibition Art of Two Germanys/Cold War Cultures, this book project accompanies shows at Museum Kurhaus Kleve and the Stadtische Galerie Wolfsburg/Kunstmuseum Magdeburg. With texts by curator Harald Kunde and Andreas Maier.
